Trying to pin down the exact code reference or rule number that covers hoistway access requirements. Specifically looking at situations where maintenance or inspection access is needed, and whether a specific unlocking device or tool is required.
If anyone hasthe ASME reference or knows how it's handled in their jurisdiction, I'd really appreciate the clarity.

You're looking for ASME A17.1 / CSA B44, specifically around Section 2.12 (Hoistway Door Locking Devices).
yeah, a specific, non common unlocking tool/device is absolutely required for maintenance/inspection access from the landing side. Which version your jurisdiction uses (e.g., 2016, 2019, 2022) might tweak the exact rule number, so always double check your local code!

What's the exact ASME A17.1 rule that outlines when a hoistway access unlocking device is required especially for inspection access at top or bottom landings?
